Night Support

How does it work?

One of our Newborn Care Specialists, who you would have met previously, will attend to your home for her shift at a time agreed with you.

On her first night with you, she will take a history of the pregnancy, birth (or adoption), the baby's background, feeding so far and make a plan with you for the night ahead.

If you are breastfeeding, she will carry out a breastfeeding assessment to make sure all is well, and discuss your prefererences for the night.

During the night she will bring your baby to you if it is what you have agreed on, supervise the feed, offer you tips and take your baby away to change the nappy (or help you in the early days if you wish to do so yourself), settle the baby, maximising your sleep.

In the morning, she will return your baby to you and briefly hand over how the night went.

She will also email you a report of the night events in the 24h after her shift with some tips, advice, guidelines and links if needed.

If you have decided that bottle feeding (expressed breast milk or formula) is how you will feed your baby, your Newborn Care Specialist will be happy to:

- support you with bottle feeding your baby at night while you sleep.

- changing your baby's nappy

- settling your baby to sleep

It is also possible for you to offer some breast feeds in the night and your Newborn Care Specialist will also do a feed or two with expressed breast milk so you get a longer stretch of sleep!

We are flexible & more than happy to work with you to protect breastfeeding whilst you get some rest!

NB: As per lactation evidence, we do recommend that you wait until 6 weeks post partum before expressing breast milk to allow your supply to establish.

How many nights should you book?

We want to be as flexible as possible, but if you are keen to breastfeed, we would advise you to get 2 to 3 nights a week (one on, one off) so you can work on establishing milk supply by reducing the time you spend away from your baby, at least in the initial first few weeks.
